In an effort to catalyse responses - both from the onsite participants as well as those online - we solicit your response to the Question of the Day. We will bring a fresh question every day during the Conference, and aim to provoke a thought process that leads us to an effective Call to Action.

Name ONE action you would take in your country (or area) to achieve political acceptance and implementation of the call to action for Health Promotion. eg influence party manifestos; mobilise HP community; catalyse leadership...

Question of the Day - call to action

My call to action is for health professionals to stop thinking intuitively about health promotion but rather have a proper evidence base to any initiatives undertaken. Too often health professionals think that they are right because of their experience and education and ignore the actual needs of the people they are serving. For health promotion to become mainstreamed it must involve all stakeholders and not the priviledged elite of organisations.

In Scotland this is the reason why we are still regarded as the 'sick man of Europe' despite record investment levels in health. What we need to do is move from being world class at reporting our many health problems to being world class at remedying them. This requires new and innovative health promotion strategies and ones that come from the operational level as opposed to some grandiose plan hatched by a committee of middle class intellectuals.
